FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you want to know about BorderSmart, answered in plain language.
Which border crossings does BorderSmart support?
BorderSmart currently supports two crossings in the San Diego-Tijuana corridor: San Ysidro (the world's busiest land port of entry) and Otay Mesa. We plan to add more crossings in future updates.
How accurate are the forecasts?
Forecasts combine public border wait-time data, historical patterns, traffic context, and optional crossing reports. Accuracy is strongest for weekday routines and drops slightly around major holidays when patterns shift unpredictably. We display a confidence indicator so you always know how reliable a given forecast is.
Is BorderSmart free?
Yes. BorderSmart is free to download, and live wait times, forecasts, and alerts are included at no cost. The app uses optional ads, and you can remove them with a one-time ad-free upgrade.
Does it work without an internet connection?
Partially. BorderSmart caches the most recent data on your device so you can still view the last known wait times and a forecast even when you're offline. Live data requires a connection.
What lane types does BorderSmart show?
BorderSmart shows wait times for all major lane types reported by CBP: standard vehicle lanes, Ready Lanes (for travelers with RFID-enabled documents), and SENTRI lanes for pre-approved trusted travelers.
How do crossing alerts work?
In the app, choose a lane and an alert intent: a good crossing window or an unusually heavy wait. BorderSmart compares current conditions with typical patterns and sends a push notification when that intent is met.
Where does the wait time data come from?
BorderSmart uses public border wait-time data as one input, then adds historical patterns, traffic context, and optional crossing reports to help estimate how waits may move. BorderSmart is not affiliated with or endorsed by CBP.
Why do the app stores say BorderSmart collects data?
BorderSmart does not require an account, name, email, or GPS permission for core use. The app does use anonymous device IDs, diagnostics, analytics events, push tokens, and purchase entitlement data so alerts, crash reports, ads, and ad-free upgrades can work.
Can BorderSmart help with document, lane, or inspection instructions?
BorderSmart helps with planning and app support. For document, lane, or inspection instructions, follow CBP signs and officer directions.
